I finished the girls tops today and just in time since I want them to wear them for our family pictures on Saturday. The pattern I bought was Simplicity 3511. The measurements for the smallest blouse were perfect for Gweniveve.
She really didn't want to get her picture taken as you can see from the photo. She is telling me that she wants to dance in her new shirt.
Since I could not find the pattern in a smaller size to fit Penelope I had to figure it out on my own. I just trimmed off some of each of the pattern so make her smaller and luckily it all worked perfectly.
The other thing on my list to make was a Birthday hat since it is Penelope's birthday this weekend. I made the same hat for Gweniveve almost 2 years ago for her birthday but the tutorial I used did not tell me what size to cut the hat so if you remember the hat ended up being rather large. I figured out this time around what size, but of course I made the letter rather large. I really have a hard time with hats. I am deciding if I should take the P off and make it smaller or if I really care???
I still have alot to do to get ready for this weekend. Like I mentioned we are getting our family pictures taken since I finally have my braces off and I convinced my husband to get some taken ( he HATES getting his picture taken ). Then I have to clean the house and make a Foofa cake for Penelope's birthday. We are just having family over but we are having the theme of Yo Gabba Gabba since she just loves the show. It should be a fun but busy weekend.
Today I am going to show you how to make Rosetta fabric flowers to embellish your T-shirt. I used a T-shirt that I had just bought at Target for $5.00, but use whatever T-shirt you have in any color you want.
Step 1:
Make sure you contain any obstacles that are in your way before you sew. Mine always has a habit of playing with my foot pedal as I am trying to use it.
2. I grabbed a yard of fabric ( but you can use whatever scraps you have) and cut a 3" strip on the fold of my fabric. So when I opened the strip up I had a 44" long strip. I liked this since the selvages were on each end and you don't have to worry about fraying.
3. Then I sewed the strip right sides together.
Now that your 44" long strip is all sewn together you need to make it right side out.
4. Attach a safety pin. This will give you something to hold on to as you turn the fabric right side out.
5. Stick the safety pin in the opening.
6. Start pushing the safety pin up the tube, it will start gathering at the bottom as you do this.
7. As it gathers to much you then pull on the bottom where it is gathered and this will help loosen the gathers so that you can continue pushing the safety pin up the tube to get it all the way out.
Here is a video if you are confused or are like me and need more of a visual.
8. Once the safety pin is all the way out pull the fabric at the bottom until all of it is right side out. Now you have your strip to start sewing your rosetta embellishment. FYI: Do not iron since we want it to be rounded.
9. Figure out where you want your rosetta on your t-shirt and take one side of the strip that has the selvage edge and sew it down. MAKE SURE YOU ARE ONLY SEWING ONE LAYER OF YOUR T-SHIRT SO THAT YOU DON'T SEW YOUR SHIRT TOGETHER. Make sure that your seam from where you sewed the strip together is on the inside of the circle so that as you sew the rosetta the seam will not show.
10. Start sewing in a circle, we are starting with the outside circle first. As you sew fold over some of the material and sew over your folds. This will help get more of the flower look.
11. As you sew you will see that it starts to stick up like a flower petal does which is exactly what we want.
12. As you start the next circle sew it down right below where your last circle was sewn down. As you do this then the "petal" will cover the stitching.
13. When you get to the inside where you have covered the t-shirt with all the circles and you have some extra fabric, cut the fabric so that you have alittle left to finish the rosetta.
14. Since you now have a raw edge, stick the raw edge into the hole so none is showing. Hint: I rolled the fabric to help it get into the hole and then used a pencil to help stick it inside.
15. Once that is done then I back stitched on the very center of the rosetta to help hold everything in place.
You are done!
If you want to add more, then just make sure you start the next one really close to the last so that they butt up against eachother and just follow the same process. You can always make your rosetta's different sizes!!!
If you have any questions please leave them in the comments and I will answer them there.
